Operational data processing for ground-based remote sensing of the atmosphere on the EWC

E-Profile EUMETNET Programme

E-Profile is a EUMETNET Programme which coordinates the measurements of atmospheric profiles of wind, clouds, aerosols, temperature, and humidity from networks of ground-based remote sensing instruments in Europe.

It provides centralized data processing for radar wind profilers (RWP) and automatic lidars and ceilometers (ALC) with the main goal to promote the usability of vertical profiles for operational meteorology and bring support and expertise to data providers and end users.

Currently, new developments are being implemented to extend the existing networks, provide new data products or improve the data quality.

These new developments mainly take place on the European Weather Cloud (EWC). For instance, E-Profile has now setup the first international network of Doppler wind lidars which measure wind profiles at high spatial and temporal resolution in the atmospheric boundary layer.

For these instruments, wind profiles are processed centrally and in real-time on the EWC (see example in Figure on the side), before being distributed further and used for data assimilation (e.g. at ECMWF).

E-Profile also uses the EWC for the setup of a network of microwave radiometers dedicated to real-time humidity and temperature profiling.

Here, the EWC is used to compute the thermodynamic retrievals and for the monitoring of the data quality.

An example of temperature and relative humidity profiles measured above Payerne (Switzerland) and processed on the EWC can be seen in Figure on the side.
